How clan cat names are built

Etymology

A clan cat name is two halves joined without a space. The prefix is something visible or local: pelt colour (Amber, Russet, Silver), a plant from the territory (Bramble, Sorrel, Heather), weather (Frost, Mist, Storm) or an animal the queen saw. The suffix carries rank and character: claw, heart, pelt, tail, storm. Ember plus claw gives Emberclaw, and every listener hears both parts at once — what the cat looks like, and what the cat is.

The suffix also tracks age. Kits carry -kit until roughly six moons, apprentices swap to -paw for training, and a full warrior earns a permanent suffix chosen for temperament or a deed: -heart for courage, -claw or -fang for a fighter, -foot or -leap for a runner, -pool or -stream for a swimmer, -pelt or -fur for a plain steady cat. Leaders drop whatever they had and take -star. The prefix never changes across the whole life.

Clan names work the opposite way round: a terrain or plant word plus a group word, so a camp in the bracken becomes Fernclan. Cats within a clan share it as a collective, not as a family surname, and it says where they hunt rather than who their parents were. When you name a cat of your own, choose the prefix first from something a mother could actually see at birth, then let the suffix arrive later, once you know how the cat turned out.

Questions

FAQ

How do warrior cat names work?

Every name is a prefix plus a suffix written as one word. The prefix describes the cat — colour, marking, plant or weather — and is given at birth. The suffix marks rank and nature: kit as a newborn, paw as an apprentice, then a permanent warrior ending such as heart, claw, pelt or tail.

What does the -paw ending mean?

It marks an apprentice, a young cat in training under a mentor. The prefix stays the same, so a kit called Emberkit becomes Emberpaw when training starts and takes a full warrior suffix afterwards. Only leaders change again, replacing their warrior suffix with star when they take charge of a clan.

How do I pick a warrior name for my own cat character?

Pick the prefix from something a mother would notice at birth: pelt colour, a marking, the plant or weather around the nursery. Save the suffix for the character's personality once you know it — claw and fang for fighters, pool and stream for swimmers, heart for the loyal, pelt or fur for the quietly steady.

What are clan names and how are they formed?

A clan name joins a landscape or plant word to a group word, describing the territory the cats hold rather than any bloodline. Every cat in the group carries it collectively. Use it as a setting label alongside a personal name, the way you would say a cat of the moor group rather than treating it as a surname.

Can I use these names in my own stories or roleplay?

Yes. The prefix-plus-suffix convention is a naming system, and systems are free to use. These names are assembled from ordinary English nature and body words rather than copied from any published character list, so nothing generated here belongs to anyone else. Use them for fan writing, original fiction or roleplay.
