How warlock names are built
¶A warlock's name is a contract summary. The first element is what was asked for — halv a long life, card revenge, ombr silence, wrenn her sight back — and the second is what was signed away in exchange: sel a name signed, var years lent, thral service owed, tithe the tenth taken. Halvirvar reads as a long life for years lent. Nobody chooses this name in the ordinary sense. It is what the agreement is called, and the person is what the agreement happens to.
The second element is in the patron's register rather than any mortal one, and it is deliberately legal. Pacts are drafted, not sworn: they have terms, riders, sureties, forfeits and a schedule. That is why warlock names sound like clauses when you slow them down, and why two warlocks with the same patron can compare the endings of their names and work out immediately who got the better deal. Nobody involved considers that an unkind thing to do.
The line that follows the given name records the patron and the standing: Nightbound, Emberlent, Voidcalled, Glasssworn, Thornowed. It is a relationship rather than a family, and it can change without warning, because the standing can. A warlock whose second name has shifted from lent to owed is in trouble that the rest of the party should probably be told about, and one who has stopped using it at all is either free or hiding.
Questions
What are good warlock names?
Ones that state a trade. Pair a want with a price: Cardirsel, Ombravar, Halvirtithe, Verrescinden. Read the two halves together and you should get a bargain a desperate person would actually make. Names that only sound sinister miss the point — the horror in a warlock name is that it is specific, and that somebody agreed to it.
How is a warlock name different from a wizard or sorcerer name?
A wizard name claims a discipline, a sorcerer name describes a bloodline, and a warlock name records a transaction. That is why warlock names carry legal vocabulary rather than elemental or academic vocabulary: terms, liens, forfeits, tithes. If your character's name says what they can do rather than what they owe, it probably belongs to one of the other two classes.
What is a good warlock last name?
Use a pact-name that pairs the patron with your standing: Nightbound, Emberlent, Voidcalled, Mirrorsold, Thornowed, Hollowkept. It says who holds the contract and how comfortable the position currently is. Because standing changes, the second name can change mid-campaign, which is one of the most useful pieces of characterisation a warlock can carry.
Do warlocks keep the name they were born with?
For a while. Most pacts overwrite the front of the name first, so a warlock spends a few years answering to something that is half theirs and half the agreement's. Older warlocks tend to have nothing of the original left. If you want the character to feel recently made, keep a plain birth name in play and let people who knew them before still use it.
Can I use these names in D&D or my own fiction?
Yes. The want-roots and price-roots here are invented for this generator and no patron named on this page corresponds to a published entity, so nothing produced belongs to anyone else. Use the names for player characters, NPCs, novels or commercial modules with no attribution required.
