How robots are named

Etymology

Machines are named after what they do, and the convention is older than robotics. Industrial arms, submersibles, mine rescue units and hospital dispensers all carry the same shape of label: an abbreviated function, a class element and a series number. The function comes first because that is what the paperwork needs to sort on. A robot listed on a manifest as a welding unit will be a weld-something, and every technician who reads the line knows what arrives on the pallet.

The designations here follow that grammar. A function root carries the job, coolant, salvage, telemetry, milling, and a class morpheme carries the unit type, warden, adjunct, array, chassis, actuator. Ferrex is an iron model. Chillward is a coolant warden. Nothing about the name is expressive, because nobody expressive was in the room. Designations get assigned by whoever writes the requisition, and they are built to be unambiguous on a spreadsheet rather than pleasant in the mouth.

The manufacturer line does the work a surname does. It records who built the unit, which parts fit it and who carries the liability, and it is stamped on the chassis where a human can read it while crouching. Crews then ignore all of it. A unit issued a fourteen-character designation gets called Ferr or Nine or the Cat within a week, and that gap between the assigned name and the used one is usually the most interesting thing about a robot character.

Questions

FAQ

How do you name a robot?

Start from the job, not the personality. Take the function the machine performs, shorten it to a root a technician would recognise, and attach a class element for the unit type. That gives you a name which reads as issued rather than chosen. If you want the robot to feel like a character, let the crew shorten the designation instead of handing it a human name outright.

What are good names for a friendly robot?

Short ones. Affection in a workplace shows up as clipping: a four-syllable designation becomes one syllable, usually the opening fragment or the numeral. Pick a designation with a piece that survives being cut down, then use the cut-down form in dialogue and the full form on documents. The contrast between the two is what makes a machine read as liked rather than merely owned.

Why do robot names end in x, on and oid?

Those endings come from Greek and Latin combining forms already used for machine parts and scientific instruments, so they carried an air of engineering before robots existed. An -oid means form or likeness, -on marks a unit or a particle, and -ix and -ex read as model markers because catalogue numbering used them. They signal category rather than identity, which is exactly right for a designation.

Do robots have surnames?

Not surnames, but manufacturer lines do the same job. The line identifies the builder and the production family, so two units out of the same works share it the way siblings share a family name, and spare parts get ordered against it. Writers get useful friction from this: a robot loyal to its crew still carries the name of the firm that owns its design.
