How Indian names are built
¶India has no single naming system, so this generator models one: the Sanskrit-derived pattern used across the Hindi-speaking north and, with local spellings, in Bengal, Gujarat and Maharashtra. It is not the Tamil system, where an initial stands for the father's name and there is no surname; not the Malayalam house-name system; not the Arabic-derived pattern used by Indian Muslims; and not the Sikh use of Singh and Kaur in place of a family name.
Sanskrit builds a personal name the way it builds any compound: two words welded together, the second usually the head. Dev, god, plus datta, given, gives Devdatta, god-given. Chandra, moon, plus shekhar, crest, gives Chandrashekhar, moon-crested. Raj, kingdom, plus endra, chief, gives Rajendra. Feminine names take an -a or -i ending on the same stock, so the same elements produce Vimal and Vimala, Sundar and Sundari.
North Indian surnames are a mixed layer. Some record learning: Trivedi, Dwivedi and Chaturvedi mean of three, two and four Vedas. Some record an office or trade: Kulkarni was a village clerk, Deshpande a district accountant, Patel a village headman, Ghosh a cowherd. Some record a place, such as Agarwal from Agroha. Many are also community markers, which is why one surname can be common in one region and unknown in the next.
Questions
What are common Indian last names?
Singh, Sharma, Patel, Kumar, Gupta, Verma, Yadav, Das and Reddy are among the most widespread, but no name is national. Patel is Gujarati, Reddy and Naidu are from the south, Ghosh and Dutta are Bengali, and Singh runs across Punjab, Rajasthan and the Hindi belt. A surname usually tells you a region and a community before it tells you anything else.
Do all Indians have surnames?
No. In Tamil Nadu the usual pattern is a father's name reduced to an initial followed by the given name, so a person may be R. Karthik with no family name at all. Malayali names often carry a house name. The inherited surname is a northern and western pattern that official forms have spread, not a universal Indian one.
What do Sanskrit names mean?
They are compounds of ordinary words, and the meaning is usually transparent to anyone with a little Sanskrit or Hindi. Suryaprakash is sun-light, Ratnakar is jewel-maker, an old word for the ocean. Because the elements are common nouns, the same word can appear in a name, a place and a poem without changing form.
Why is Kumar used as a middle name?
Kumar means prince or youth, and Kumari means maiden. Both became conventional fillers in the middle slot for people who had no inherited surname or preferred not to display one, which is why Rajesh Kumar Sharma and Anita Kumari are so common. In some registers Kumar has itself hardened into a surname.
