How band names are built
¶Most band names come from three or four repeating shapes. The oldest is the definite-article plural, an adjective or noun followed by a plural: the Hollow Lanterns, the Restless Magpies. It arrived with skiffle and beat groups, it reads as a gang rather than a solo act, and it still signals guitars. Drop the article and the same pair sounds colder and more modern, which is why so many acts formed after the nineties did exactly that.
The second shape is the incongruous pair: a word from one register bolted to a word from another. Arctic plus a species of monkey, plastic plus a cathedral. The join is meant to be slightly wrong. It works because the friction gives the name a picture and stops it sliding into genre wallpaper, and it is memorable for the same reason a mixed metaphor is. Two concrete words beat one abstract one almost every time.
Genre does most of the remaining work. Metal leans on hard consonants, weather and Latinate abstractions; folk reaches for landscape, trades and seasons; electronic acts favour machinery, geometry and single invented words.
